    At the Missouri-Yellowstone confluence, Fort Buford was "a major link in American military strategy of the 19th century." Established in 1866, Fort Buford would house six companies of infantry and cavalry. African-American servicemen, called "buffalo soldiers" by the Indians; were stationed here from 1891 to 1895. Fort Buford soldiers patrolled the international boundary, guarded railway construction crews, and provided escorts for steamers and wagon trains. Fort Buford was abandoned in 1895.
