Spanning more than 47,000 square miles across three different states, the Ozark Mountains are one of the defining features of the South. Formed mostly by the Salem Plateau and the Springfield Plateau, the region was formed not by plate subduction, but was rather a plateau that experienced significant erosion over the course of millions of years. Evidence of the long geological history of the area is found in the simple composition of the rocks (i.e. grey dolomite sitting atop rhyolite, ancient volcanic rock). The area saw a large boom in trade and mining by French settlers, and continues to be an important player in the South's Lead Belt region.
