In the sovereign city of Roanoke, Virginia,, the Fire Station No. 1 is a celebrated former fire station. It was constructed by eminent architects Huggins and Bates. Built in 1907, it stands stern and elegant even after several decades of its establishment. It is renowned for its great history and the first fire engine truck was bought over in 1911. The architectural pattern followed is the Georgian Revival style. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 7, 1973.

Virginian Railway Station is located on the corner of Jefferson Street and was built in 1909. It is one of the only existing examples of the Spanish Revival style architecture in Virginia. Standing atop Roanoke's Mill Mountain, the Roanoke Star is the largest illuminated star to have been created by man. Built in 1949 to inaugurate the year's Christmas festivities, the star soon became a permanent attraction, and has been responsible for giving Roanoke the title of 'Star City of the South'. Standing tall at a height of 1045 feet (318.52 meters), the star is visible from high above the city.
Mill Mountain Zoo is located atop the beautiful Mill Mountains in Roanoke City. The zoo dates back to 1952 and was accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) in 1995. It houses more than 50 species of animals, birds, and reptiles; some of them rare and endangered. The main attractions at the zoo are a Siberian Tiger 'Ruby', an African Elephant 'Frump-Frump', a Japanese macaque 'Oops', Red Pandas, Snow Leopards, White-Naped Cranes and Bald Eagles. Enjoy a fun ride on 'Zoo Choo', the miniature model G-16 train which travels along the length and breadth of the zoo, through an animal-themed tunnel.
