Stunning exhibits of prehistoric dinosaurs, mammals, fossils and minerals native to the Black Hills are the draw at this museum. It is located on the campus of the South Dakota School of Mines in Rapid City. Displays here, make you think you have just stepped into a "big city" natural history museum. Check out the complete, puzzled together skeletal remains of dinosaurs, sea lizards, and marine and land Jurassic and Cretaceous reptiles and mammals. Collections of rocks, ores, minerals and gold are also on display. Educational programs and excavation outings are planned throughout the year. Admission is free.
The Journey Museum and Gardens narrate stories about the native Americans. It has various kinds of exhibits that exploit different avenues like Geology, Paleontology and so forth. Call for details.
Among the art on display at this fine arts center is a one-hundred-eighty-foot canvas with an oil painting panorama that spans two hundred years of American history; in addition there are other galleries on the site that exhibit and sell the contemporary works of artists from the area and elsewhere.

Normally open seven days a week from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., until 6:00 p.m. June 1st through Labor Day, the South Dakota Air & Space Museum near Ellsworth Air Force Base has on display a B1B Lancer, T-33 Shooting Star, C-47 Skytrain, F-86 Saber, B-26 Invader, B-29 Superfortress, L-5 Sentinel, H-13 Helicopter, Minuteman II Missile, Nike Ajax Missile, and more.
Housed in the old Keystone Schoolhouse building which was built in 1900 and features early Victorian architecture, this museum contains an array of historic displays such as early day mining tools, historic pictures and photo collections, rock and mineral collections, and Carrie Ingalls memorabilia.
The Rushmore Borglum Story at the Borglum Historical Center is a must to see before a trip Mount Rushmore. A painter and sculpture, Gutzon Borglum began carving Mount Rushmore at the age of 60. His other works include Seated Lincoln and the Henry Ward Beecher Memorial.
