»Pulp: A Film About Life, Death & Supermarkets

November 23, 2014 7:30 PM

Taking its name from the Michael Caine film of the same title, Pulp is a Sheffield, England-based band that has gone through multiple reincarnations and lineup changes since its formation in 1978 by Jarvis Cocker. Dealing with a slew of tempestuous relationships with record labels in the 1980s--certain labels attempted to convince the band to alter its direction to commercial pop, while others consistently pressured it to meet impossible deadlines that limited its creativity--Pulp didn't achieve commercial or critical success until the release of His 'n' Hers in 1994. Though the band consistently shifted its sound in conjunction to its various incarnations and labels, it finally settled on a melodramatic post punk-Britpop fusion, leading Pulp to be grouped alongside greats of the time such as Blur, Suede and The Stone Roses. While the height of the group's fame occurred throughout the 1990s and it disbanded for a period of time for Cocker to deal with a drug addiction and a focus on a solo career, 2011 found Pulp reformed and performing at festivals throughout Europe and the UK.

»Lagwagon

November 23, 2014 7:00 PM

Formed in Santa Barbara, California, Lagwagon is a punk rock/skate punk band that fed off the growing interest in punk rock and skateboarding in Southern California during the 1990s. The band recorded its album Duh, in four days before relasing the debut in 1992. After releasing its sophomore effort Trashed in 1994 while several punk bands were entering the mainstream, Lagwagon opted to stay with its independent label Fat Wreck Chords, turning down a number of major label deals. Following a short hiatus that lasted from 2000 to 2002, the band released two more albums before front man Joey Cape launched a solo career and Lagwagon was once again put on hold. Despite several line up changes, including the departure of its original bassist Jesse Buglione, Lagwagon has maintained its underground fanbase throughout its career. The band released a box-set of its first five albums and embarked on a world tour in 2011.

»The Fantasticks

November 23, 2014 2:00 PM

Based on Edmond Rostand's Les Romantiques, The Fantasticks follows the story of two young lovers as they wind through the events of their lives. The two grow up as neighbors, and their fathers, hoping they fall in love, build a wall between their houses knowing a child's desire for the forbidden. They do fall in love, but after discovering their fathers' plot, decide to separate and figure out their lives on their own terms. With a score by Harvey Schmidt and lyrics by Tom Jones, the off-Broadway production has been running for decades, starting in 1960, making it the longest run of a musical in the world. Now considered a lasting classic, The Fantasticks evokes several great love stories of the ages as it explores independence and the will to love with simplicity, style and heart.
