Upon completion in 1895, City Hall's bell tower, at 353 feet, was actually the third tallest structure in the country. The edifice was designed in a German Renaissance Revival style by architect Henry Koch. A fire in 1929 forced the upper part of the building to be rebuilt. Solomon Juneau, the Milwaukee's first mayor, is the namesake for the large bell located in the bell tower. In 1973 City Hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places, and in 2005 it was declared a National Historic Landmark.
