Cleveland Park was opened to the public in 1928 by the Cleveland family. The entire area covers 122 acres (49.37 hectares) of land near downtown Greenville and along the the Reedy River. Picnic shelters, fitness trail, volleyball and tennis courts, softball field, and playgrounds are all scattered throughout the park. Specific attractions in the park include the Greenville Zoo, Rock Quarry Garden, Fernwood Nature Trail and Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
There is only one golf course in the world that has each hole conceived by a different designer. It is Crosswinds Golf Club in Greenville, South Carolina, and the reason you have never heard of it is because it is an 18-hole, par-3 course. What otherwise might have been just another fun-to-play ,but quickly forgettable par-3 layout is instead both fun-to-play and rather memorable.
Designed by renowned architect Tom Jackson, this championship 18 hole, par 72 golf course features plush bent grass and includes a driving range, putting greens, a full service clubhouse, and a fully equipped pro shop.
If you're looking for a good place to take children in the Greenville-Spartanburg area, look no further. Occupying 14 acres (5.7 hectares), the Greenville Zoo houses hundreds of different species of animals from around the globe. Some noteworthy exhibits include the lions, elephants, giraffes, primates and tortoises. Also on the premises are picnic areas, play areas, a concession stand and gift shop. The zoo is open seven days a week from 10a to 4:30p. The cost of admission is USD7.75 for adults and USD4.5 for children. Group discounts are available, and kids under three years of age are always admitted free of charge.
Adjacent to Furman University, the 1540-acre (623-hectare) Paris Mountain State Park was built during the Great Depression in the 1930s and provides great mountain biking and hiking for families and lovers of the great outdoors. The Park Center is located in a renovated bathhouse and contains a the park map as well as exhibits and classes on the surrounding flora and fauna. Filled with lakes that are perfect for a refreshing swim or a day of fishing, summer is the best time to visit. The park closes three hours earlier during the winter.
The Spartanburg Swim Center is run by the Spartanburg Department of Parks and Recreation. Open to the public, the Swim Center's facilities can be used for recreational, instructional, or rental activities. The diving board to the junior Olympic-sized pool is open to use during recreational swim times. A gym room is also on the premises, but is only to be used by those with memberships.
Lake Conestee Nature Park is an enchanting green space, just a few miles from downtown Greenville. Encompassing 400 acres (160 hectares) of land, the park is a major facility for recreational purposes. There is an array of bird, reptile and mammal species that dominate the park. Over 170 species of birds, alone are reported to be in the park. The park is beautiful natural habitat and a calm place away from the buzz. It is a perfect spot for picnics or exploration of the wild. The park conducts various programs and events to entertain and enlighten the visitors about the nature. The cool and serene atmosphere of the park is sure to relax your tired nerves after a long. week.
The perfect setting for a romantic outing or a picturesque day with family, Falls Park on the Reedy guarantees a great time. Feel free to roam through the gardens, or to stop and take in the sights of Reedy River Falls from Liberty Bridge. The park has no entrance fee and is open every day of the week from 7a to 9p. One of the best manicured and scenic golf courses in the area, this beautiful 18 hole golf course includes a driving range, snack bar, and a fully stocked pro shop. Lessons by a PGA professional are available.
The Simpsonville Heritage Park is a great place to spend outdoors. Not only are there grounds enough to run and play in but the Charter Amphitheatre is also located here. There are paved trails for biking and hiking as well as six baseball and softball fields that include batting cages.
Located four miles past Greenville Memorial Hospital toward Piedmont, Foothills Fencing Academy is dedicated to teaching the art of swordfighting for fun, fitness and competition.
This 6,800 yard 18 hole, par 72 championship golf course is set in the Blue Ridge foothills and features Bermuda fairways and bent grass greens. A driving range, putting and chipping greens, and a fully stocked pro shop are also on site. The course is open Tuesday through Sunday.
