»Mary Poppins

January 29, 2015 6:00 PM

Based on the book series and the 1964 Disney film of the same name, Mary Poppins the musical tells the story of the extraordinary English nanny who cares for the children at number 17 Cherry Tree Lane. With gravity-defying tea parties and inanimate objects coming to life, the show follows Mary Poppins as she teaches the children lessons for life and puts their family back together with favorite songs like "A Spoonful of Sugar," "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" and "Let's Go Fly a Kite."

»Rapture, Blister, Burn

January 29, 2015 7:30 PM

Heated discussion and hearty laughter are sure to result from "Rapture, Blister, Burn" -- Gina Gionfriddo's white-hot new play, which "The New York Times" called "intensely smart and immensely funny." Twice nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, Gionfriddo -- whose recent TV work includes writing for the Emmy-nominated Netflix series "House of Cards" -- has crafted a play that makes audiences howl and critics swoon. "Rapture, Blister, Burn" centers on Catherine, a rockstar feminist academic, who returns home to take care of her elderly mother. There, she encounters an old flame and an "ex" best friend, both of whom seem to be excelling at the kind of conventional life Catherine rejected. But first impressions can be very deceiving. This Round House Theatre production explores how the lives of women have (and have not) changed, presenting a twisted view of feminism ... or feminism with a new twist.

»Zola Jesus

January 29, 2015

By the time Nika Danilova was 20 she had already released two 7"s and a full length album as front woman for her band Zola Jesus. Danilova's work ethic is extremely impressive and the no-fi electronic tinged music she cranks out has captured the admiration of many a music critic who's looking for the youngest indie musician capable of dishing out a mean style of original material that's uninhibited and void of trepidation. While Danilova initially evaded the befuddled world of sparkling crisp music production, she recently traded her lo-fi leanings for more epic layers of rich sound, still retaining the haunting aesthetic of her powerful voice, but more open to that world of production she vehemently avoided before. The result has been just as impressive and Zola Jesus is still an act to behold.

»London Grammar (New Date)

January 29, 2015 6:00 PM

London Grammar is a trip-hop influenced, avant-pop trio from the UK that's composed of Hanna Reid, Dot Major and Dan Rothman. With roots dating back to 2009, when Reid and Rothman met at University, the band released its first single, "Hey Now," in 2012, followed shortly by its debut EPMetal & Dust. Combining ethereal vocals, melancholy guitar and a sharp indie rock sensibility, London Grammar earned a solid fan base by the time it released its debut LP, If You Wait, in 2013.

»Borgore - Washington DC

January 29, 2015 9:00 PM

Electronic music can be enjoyed on several different levels. Some people like intense, club-friendly dance music; others, mellow, methodically produced material that's easy to relax to. Fans of the former category of electronic composition will undoubtedly find the sonic discharge Israeli-based dubstep producer Borgore creates. With wobbly tonal shifts and off-beat rhythm flourishes, the up-and-coming electronic artist is making waves on the modern electro circuit and with more time under his belt--playing at different raves and festivals--he'll no doubt prove to be an extremely interesting artist to track.
